American History + Animation + Creativity = DPLA's GIF it Up contest that you and your students can enter. See above for one of last year's winners!
Join us for our first BPCS Reads! event of the year! We'll be reading and then discussing Teddy Roosevelt's very favorite book on October 18th @ 6:30 in the Library. The books arrived yesterday, so come get your copy!
In the shadow of last night's debate, here's a source you can use to search the entire debate by keyword and then view those clips.
Make a commitment to check out this ever-changing site on a regular basis. It's a gateway to millions of objects pulled from more than 1,000 cultural institutions and archives.
Scholastic's Art & Writing Awards opened for submissions on September 14th. These awards are almost 100 years old, and count Sylvia Plath, Andy Warhol, Lena Dunham, Robert Redford, and Ken Burns among their past winners. Check out the guidelines & deadlines and pass on the word to your students!
Want help teaching poetry? Poets.org just created "teach this poem" which delivers a new poem to you each week, complete with teaching resources and activities.
Those folks at the Smithsonian never stop sharing great free resources! Check out their newest project, specially designed for teachers and students.

The children's long list for the National Book Awards just came out today! I've only read one of these so far, and it has stayed with me for months...
Want to pay it forward and get something in return? Then scour your bookshelves at home for books you're ready to part with, bring them to the Central Branch of the Brooklyn Public Library between now and 10/15, and make plans to attend their amazing book sale on October 15th!
My bet is that you've read a lot more books than you realize! So join Goodreads today, start creating virtual bookshelves, and friend me on it while you're at it!
A great new FREE literacy support site with hundreds of reading passages for middle and high schoolers!
Here is a list of the magazines our Library subscribes to. Feel free to check them out as well as suggest other magazines you think we should be getting!
When we have to get rid of books, one of the places we now donate to is this organization, run by Brooklynites and retired teachers Mark and Sheri Grashow. Mark has been speaking to students of all ages for years about his travels in Africa, so please let me know if you are interested and I will pass on his contact info!
Take a few minutes to look through Film for Action's list of "The Top 100 Documentaries We Can Use to Change the World." All films are either free or can be rented to watch online.

Are you a teacher working in Brooklyn? Then you should have a Brooklyn Public Library Teacher Card that will do magical things for you! Details and application here.
Do any of your students want to attend the final presidential debate in the city where the Rat Pack once roamed free? They might get to do that if they enter and win this contest! Hurry because the entry deadline is September 21st!
Who knows about the most effective technology for teachers? Another teacher, of course! Follow this blog on social media and check out the extensive archives.
I've started to create subject-specific title lists from our collection for you and your students. Please send any suggestions my way for more list ideas!
Stand up for your Freedom to Read! Banned Books Week 2016 is September 21st-October 1st. Head here and here for more information and curriculum ideas.
Want your students to be part of a global force of citizen scientists and help NASA gather data? Then check out this site!
Personal favorite. Just because. Listen to where you're from, where you've visited, or where you dream of going. Maybe have students pick places/sounds and use them for writing prompts or record our students and put BPCS on the map?
One of our HS parents is also a librarian, and wanted me to share this extensive collection of primary sources/paired curriculums with you. She volunteers for this awesome crowd-sourced organization on the side!
